Abstract
In responding to Mihaela Irimia’s contribution to this
issue, this paper wonders about the economic, political and
social underpinnings of the history of English Studies in
Romania. The kind of bearing that economic factors may have
on such histories is illustrated by recalling the case of
the establishment of the De Beers chair in the University of
Cape Town in South Africa.
