BRIAN T. EDWARDS
Northwestern University (Evanston-Chicago, U.S.A.)
Abstract
In response to Marius Jucan’s contribution to this issue,
this paper presents a differing account of the
much-discussed crisis of American Studies. Particular note
is taken of the effects of sociocultural globalization on
the discipline, and of directions in the field which have
emerged recently inside the United States and in other
contexts.
Keywords: American Studies, sociocultural
globalization, American Century, vernacular tradition,
cosmopolitan tradition
