| Abstract: | In the context of the conflict in Ukraine and the global energy crises of the past years, and also taking into account the climate objectives assumed at the international level, energy has regained significant importance, being recognized (once again) as one of the main pillars of economic and social security and stability. Starting from the idea that access to energy has been considered, since the 20th century, synonymous with modernity, the paper will analyse the role of energy in human development, as well as the development scenarios for 2030, taking into account the current policies in the matter. Thus, we have two dimensions that intertwine: human development and ensuring energy security, both of which require the fulfilment of the climate objectives assumed at the international level. From this picture, our attention will focus on nuclear energy and how it addresses these dimensions. Moving from general to particular, this paper will present the newfound interest at international level for nuclear energy, but also the controversies related to the role of nuclear in sustainable development and climate change issues. Finally, the paper will briefly describe Romania’s plans to develop its national nuclear program in order to ensure a strong, independent, and sustainable energy system. |
