The Eternity of a Burial Rite. The Throne and the Sitting Dead (abstract)
Diana Gergova (Sofia – Bulgaria)
The paper discusses a rare aspect of the burial practices in Thrace - the burials in sitting position and their chronological and territorial distribution from Prehistoric to modern times in SE Europe. Models of thrones or burials in sitting position since the Chalkolithic period, through the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age, real thrones and wall paintings from the Hellenistic period, as well as Christian burials in the Roman and modern times indicate the millennia long persistence of their specific rite. The analysis outlines the mechanism of the distribution, the cultural and ideological background, as well as the meaning of this burial rite in the “rites of the immortalisation”. |
